Same-Day Dental Crowns in Tacoma, WA
Dental crowns are used to cover up and protect damaged teeth. They’re placed over a tooth to strengthen it and protect it from further damage. They have a cosmetic purpose, too, as they can cover a cracked or severely discolored tooth.
There are two types of dental crowns available, and both are provided by us at Tacoma Family Dentistry & TMJ/Sleep Apnea Centre in Tacoma, WA. We have traditional and same-day crowns. The main difference between them is that same-day crowns only take one visit while you’ll have to come to Tacoma Family Dentistry & TMJ/Sleep Apnea Centre for two visits if you’re getting a traditional crown.
Traditional crowns are made in a lab and not in the office. After examining your oral cavity, we’ll take an impression of the damaged tooth that needs a crown. We then send the impression to the lab so they can create the crown. Labs take days to weeks to produce the end product and send it back to us.
When they do, we’ll call you back in for the second visit. During the second visit, we’ll apply the crown and make sure it’s placed properly. Traditional crowns can be made of ceramic, porcelain, or metal. Their main disadvantage is that they require more than one visit. This prompted the development of same-day crowns.
In the modern-day, people don’t have time to go to the dentist twice. Even if they did, they’d rather do something else with their free time. Same-day crowns are made in-office and take a single visit to create and apply.
When creating a same-day crown, we use an intraoral camera to produce a 3D image of the mouth and damaged tooth. The 3D image is used by a machine we have in the office to create your crown. When the machine is done, we’ll apply the crown, and you can go home. These all usually takes less than an hour or two.
Same-day crowns are time-saving, and patients love them for it. While traditional crowns can be made of ceramic, porcelain, and metal, same-day crowns are usually only made of ceramic.
