Invisalign® in Tacoma, WA
Do you smile behind your hand because your crooked teeth embarrass you, but you think you’re too old to get them straightened? No matter your age, our dentists at Tacoma Family Dentistry & Cosmetic Centre in Tacoma, WA have ways to straighten your teeth. One of the most popular ways today is with Invisalign® clear aligners.
How does Invisalign® Straighten Teeth?
Invisalign® are clear aligners that they make from flexible plastic. They come in sets of customized trays for your teeth. They fit over your teeth tightly but comfortably. You wear each set of trays for two weeks before moving onto the next set. Each set is progressively tighter because as you wear the trays, they gradually move your teeth about 1/10 of a millimeter per tray.
What Dental Issues can the Aligners Fix?
Invisalign® can repair most teeth alignment problems like:
- Open bites
- Teeth crowding
- Gaps between teeth
Most patients can wear aligners to fix most crooked teeth issues unless there is a severe problem that requires wearing heavier braces that need frequent tightening. However, our dentists at Tacoma Family Dentistry & Cosmetic Centre usually address severe bite issues in childhood because they can interfere with a patient’s ability to eat and speak properly.
Can Children Wear Invisalign® Aligners?
No, Invisalign® is only for people that have their permanent teeth. This means that teenagers from the ages of 14 and up may be able to wear them in place of heavier braces if they have mild to moderate dental issues. Some wearers may be as young as 12 years old, but all their permanent teeth must have already erupted before they can get the aligners.
How Long Do You Need to Wear Aligners?
The average length of time for wearing Invisalign® to correct a teeth alignment issue is 12 months, but you may wear them longer if your issue requires more help. However, some patients may only need to wear them for six months or so. It depends on the tooth alignment problem and its severity.
